CB Hoyo

CB Hoyo (b. 1995, Havana) left Cuba for the Dominican Republic as a child and now lives and works in Europe. Self taught and dyslexic, he treats language as his material. The texts are short, written in the register of a message never sent, and they arrive as painting, drawing, neon, print, installation and generative systems, with the form changing while the subject stays the same.

He became known for Fakes, handmade versions of canonical works reinterpreted with hand lettered lines about money, taste and authorship. The Corny Quotes series moved the same instinct towards handwritten texts on intimacy and daily life. Repetition and systems run through both, from handwriting databases to open editions and participatory works, where authorship and meaning shift depending on context and circulation.

Hoyo has exhibited in New York, Hong Kong, Los Angeles, London and Milan. Solo exhibitions include Fake and Corny at GR Gallery, New York (2020) and Everywhere and Nowhere at RÍO & MEÑAKA (2024). His monograph I Didn't Know How To Name This was published by Skira.

CB Hoyo has been represented by Plan X since 2018, when the gallery presented his first solo exhibition, Fake in Capri. Numerous exhibitions have followed in Milan and Capri, most recently Dislyxec Poet in 2025, alongside presentations at Untitled Art Miami Beach, Art Dubai and Contemporary Art Now Ibiza.
