Oliver Sundqvist (b. 1991, Stockholm) lives and works in Copenhagen. He took an MA in furniture design at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 2020, and works across sculpture and installation, stretching function, material and form until they come loose. The sculptures look at first like exuberant assemblages in electric colour, and turn out to be precisely distorted: everyday objects pulled into shapes that keep their familiarity while losing their use. He works from pop culture and cartoons as readily as from classical references, with a humour that carries a fairly serious argument about consumption, excess and what desire does to objects. Air, made for CHART in Tivoli in 2023, took the inflatable tube men used to advertise on American roadsides and detached the mechanism from its purpose.
Solo exhibitions include Salad Days at Public Service Gallery, Stockholm (2025) and Symphony Hour, his first solo exhibition in Sweden, at the same gallery, and Colossal Youth at V1 Gallery, Copenhagen (2021). His work has been shown at V1 Gallery in Copenhagen and at Art Herning, at CCA Andratx in Mallorca with Peter Bonde, at Gammel Strand and Sophienholm in Copenhagen, and at CHART Art Fair. Alongside his own practice he works with Frederik Nystrup-Larsen on collectible objects, including the Mater vases used by the restaurant Noma.
In 2024 Plan X presented Terra Mia, a two person exhibition with Maïa Régis, in Milan.
