Hiejin Yoo

Hiejin Yoo (b. 1987, Münster, Germany) is a Korean German painter based in Los Angeles. She holds a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and an MFA from UCLA, completed in 2018. Her paintings sit between figuration and abstraction, in bold colour and simplified form, and they begin as writing: short diary entries that she then translates into images. What comes out are ordinary moments, an evening, a gesture, a room, held long enough to become something else. Disembodied hands and silhouettes recur throughout, standing in for connection and for absence.

Solo exhibitions include shows at Half Gallery in New York and Los Angeles and at Gana Art in Seoul. Her work has been included in group exhibitions at Blum & Poe, Almine Rech, König Galerie and Spurs Gallery in Beijing. Her paintings are held in the collections of the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, the Pérez Art Museum Miami, the Institute of Contemporary Art Miami, the FLAG Art Foundation in New York and the Xiao Museum in Rizhao.

Yoo has worked with Plan X since 2022, taking part in the group exhibition Tutti Frutti at Plan X Milan, followed by Mind Massagers at Plan X Capri in 2024 and L'aria aveva una forma in 2025.
