Seeing Double doesn’t offer one answer to what identity is. Instead, it presents many layered, contradictory, and constantly in motion.

Opening this summer at Plan X Gallery in Milan, the exhibition brings together a group of artists who explore the fluid nature of the self in a world that never stays still. What does it mean to define who we are, when everything around us is shifting, socially, politically, emotionally, and even perceptually?

Throughout the gallery, each work invites a reconsideration of the self. Some artists dive into personal memory, emotion, or trauma, offering glimpses into inner worlds that feel fragile, raw, or unresolved. Others approach identity through distortion, using reflections, doubles, and shadow selves to suggest that what we see is never quite the whole truth. Across the exhibition, the boundary between inside and outside becomes increasingly porous: thoughts become visible, surfaces become symbols, and narratives overlap, blur, and sometimes collapse.

Seeing Double plays with tension between the private and the public, the constructed and the inherited, the stable and the unstable. Identity, here, is not presented as something we possess, but as something we negotiate. It is shaped by time, tradition, and community, as well as by silence, absence, and erasure. The show doesn’t try to reconcile these tensions. Instead, it offers a space where they can coexist where contradiction is not a problem to solve, but a reality to inhabit.

In this sense, Seeing Double is less about finding clarity than about embracing complexity. It invites viewers to look again—to pay closer attention to what is hidden in plain sight, to what slips between categories or resists definition. Identity is not a single image in the mirror—it’s a flicker, a fracture, a dialogue. And to truly see it, we must learn to see twice.
